Answering the Call: Inside Georgian Bay’s Volunteer Search & Rescue Team

At Medallion Group Insurance, we’re proud to support the First Responder organizations that keep our communities safe every day.

Last year, through the May $6K Community Giveaway, we provided funding to Georgian Bay Volunteer Search & Rescue (GBVSR) – supporting the purchase of essential equipment, including a specialized wheel designed for wilderness extractions.

Bringing Impact to Life

Recently, that support came full circle.

During a large-scale search and rescue training exercise in the Simcoe Forest, Shawnna Fournier, Community Partnerships Coordinator at Medallion Group Insurance, had the opportunity to take part – playing the role of an injured hiker with a severely broken leg.

“After being ‘located,’ I was carefully secured into a basket stretcher and transported out of the forest using that very equipment.”

“And yes… it was a surprisingly smooth ride. But what stood out most wasn’t the equipment – it was the people.”

Skill. Teamwork. Dedication.

“Watching GBVSR volunteers in action was incredibly powerful.

Their coordination, professionalism, and calm under pressure highlighted just how critical their role is. These are highly trained volunteers giving their time, energy, and expertise to ensure others make it home safely.

It was a firsthand reminder of the impact organizations like GBVSR have – not just during training exercises, but in real-life emergency situations.”

Why It Matters

This is exactly why the May $6K Community Giveaway exists.

To support First Responder groups doing real, life-saving work in our communities – often behind the scenes, and always with unwavering commitment.

There’s Still Time to Apply

If your organization could benefit from funding – or if you know a group that should apply – now is the time.
